A sunny Sunday with a fine breeze from the east...the makings for some fine wave sailing out east. The Wolf was at Ponquogue first, but called on his cell phone to say he was leaving to go west and check out Tiana, as Ponquogue was once again a mess.
Jeff and I caught up with him at Tiana, where he and Bill B were surveying the beach. They proclaimed that the choice spot was about 500 yards east of the Tiana access, and were going to four-wheel it to the spot. They generously offered to haul 2WD'ers Jeff and I with gear to the launch, but we felt conditions were too unpredictable, so we ended up parking at the Road L access. After a few test runs to sort out the gear call (6.2's and big boards) we downwinded it to the launch, where Jon Ford was now also in attendance. The waves were sparse and weak but the windsurfing was pleasant, and several of us were sans drysuits. After an hour or so I headed back upwind to my van, leaving Jeff with the crew.
The question that remains open is "what is up with Ponquogue?" Has the bottom changed, transforming the so-friendly wave spot to a nearly useless launch? I hope not. I'm sure we'll give Ponquogue a look the next time the wind is E or ENE, but if it continues to fail in the conditions department it may get nixed from the circuit.
Ponquogue is generally a fantastic spot to wavesail when the wind is ENE, the waves tend to be smaller at the launch than on the outside sandbar. Waves were small yesterday and wind more East, Ponquogue was not really setting up - too small. Bill and The Wolf found a nice little wave down the way that was good to sail. Fun wave in the middle of the nowhere. Today I will get on the water again at Ponquogue with a larger swell. Don't worry Micheal the "point break" at Ponquogue will not likely be "nixed" from the list of great strong island spots.
