How do you like that shot? Google Maps close up of Meschutt (on the Great Peconic...best sailed on NW from mid-tide down) was discovered by Peconic Jeff, whose blog post even spotted my van amidst the boards and sails. We sail Meschutt so rarely (2-3x/year) that by reviewing my sailing logs, the vehicles in the parking lot and the sail behind my van I’ve been able to determine that the spy shot was taken March 29th, 2007, during a session with three Johns (CPU, Ford, and Wolf) and Scott.
But there’s more Windsurfing Meschutt digitalia…the Meschutt cam not only gives you a clear view of whitecaps for a birds’ eye report from the launch, but you can even catch windsurfers on the water if you time it right.
Yes, the Interwebs shine a lot of light and love on windsurfing Meschutt, but does the crew ever choose to sail there? Rarely. It’s always “Iron Pier, Iron Pier, the Pier Pier Pier.” I’ve whined about this before but I want to whine again now. It’s true that the Pier at its best (head-high waves in side-on conditions) is better than Meschutt at its best (perfect half-pipe ramps for high quality chop-hopping). But the opposite is also true…Meschutt at its worst is disorganized chop or relatively flat water. Iron Pier at its worst is massive wind holes depositing you well down the beach, and shorebreak from hell.
I like Iron Pier as much as the next guy (well almost) but I think when the Peconic is at low tide and it’s blowing 25 from the northwest, we should pay more visits to Meschutt, from which we’d call our friends to tell them to watch.
