New to me, anyway. The Friday call was Mattituck (on the bay, not the madmen-only Sound launch.) Usually we sail from the Mattituck Yacht Club (on South winds 5.0 or stronger only) but today the choice was Veterans Memorial Park at the end of Bay Avenue. Using protractors, advanced algorithms and regression analyses, Scott and the Wolf determined that Veterans (a mere 500 yards east of the Yacht Club) was preferable given the wind blowing 5 degrees East of due South. The only difference I could tell was that the rigging and parking was betters sheltered at Veterans.
T’was myself, Scott, the Wolf, Joe Natalie, and Vulcan George Pav (George landed his first Vulcan in Bonaire recently, and immediately began attempting them upon arrival at Veterans. So he's Vulcan George until further notice.) 4.7 sails were the call, and the gusts were muscular. Mattituck served up the signature small but steep starboard ramps, and I hearbye pronounce Veterans a winner (it has been added to the Long Island Windsurfing Map.)
Sunday at North Sea Road lacked the warmth of Friday, and it was just me and the Wolf (the Wolf and I?) sailing 5.2-5.5 in the lightly rolling swell and 35 degree breeze. At one point we sailed over to the southern tip of Robins Island (where
can be found the giant osprey nest that figured significantly in a post
full of mystery.) It was not a long session, but hey, any day you wake up to a winter wonderland (my world was blanketed in snow at 9AM) and get in a few hours of windsurfing is a good day!
