Reason to Hate Mike Burns #104: Behind the Back Duck Tack

Mike Burns just makes me sick.    He’s cruel and merciless and drives me nuts.  Okay he’s one of the ten nicest guys on the planet, but still…

This latest I Hate Mike Burns bender started when I read on his web site that he was working on a new move, a description of which includes the words  “behind the back duck tack”.

A move that “includes” a behind the back duck tack.   It includes it. It’s not that Mike is working on a behind the back duck tack.  It’s that a behind the back duck tack is a component of the latest trick he’s perfecting.

I hate him I hate him I hate him I hate him.

But that didn’t stop us at the Peconic Puffin from asking him what the heck he’s doing!    Mike tells the Puffin:

“The move I’m working on is called the Culo.  The behind the back duck tack is the easy part.  It's actually just a duck tack that you don't switch your feet for.”

And he went on.    I hate him I hate him I hate him.   Then he gave me some tips for the basic duck tack, so okay I don’t hate him as much.

Three Men and a Wave

I had several titles for this post, most of which deal with how the intersection of a friendly wave and human foolishness can result in a ding.  Let's try them all!

1.  Three Men and a Wave.

Surfing etiquette exists, but I know nearly none of it, so I usually SUP on the edges of whatever break we're at to avoid egregious offenses.   But on this fine day at Road L I found myself  on more than one occasion in close company with other surfers and SUPers who don't know me well enough to know I know nothing.   In the photo above, por ejemplo, I now know that it was encumbent on me to clear out ("closest to the curl gets the wave" I've been told.  Makes sense to me.  Now.)  I didn't know it then, and so the longboarded had to jump off his board to avoid colliding with the SUPer in the middle.  Oops, and apologies!

2.  A Beautiful Day at Road L.

This is an exception to the wave+dumb=ding title.  What a beautiful day!  Check out Peconic Jeff and the Wolf soaking it in:

 

3.  Have A Slice of Humble Fin.

When The Fall Is All There's Left, It Matters A Great Deal

This photo of me (taken by Bill Doutney at the end of a freestyle heat at the East Coast Windsurfing Festival) has proven to be quite popular.   That is satisfying, because I work on my falls.  "If you can't stick the move, at least stick the fall," I say!  "Put more style in freestyle," I say!   I'll say most anything to shift the conversation from my blown moves, true, but I do like to depart the board with distinction.  From The Lion in Winter:

Prince Geoffrey: My you chivalric fool... as if the way one fell down mattered.

Prince Richard: When the fall is all there is, it matters.

(The West Wing tweaked it to 'When the fall's all that's left, it matters a great deal' which I prefer.)

My basic guidelines for falling are to make eye contact with your audience, smile, and if the first two are impossible on account of your head being underwater, do something with your feet.   It matters.

The Rise and Fall of Rec.Windsurfing

I have an article in the current issue of Windsurfing Magazine about the decline of the once wonderful online windsurfing forum known as rec.windsurfing, or "the windsurfing newsgroup" or "wreckdot" as it was affectionately called by sailors.    During its peak years it was no big deal to see 2500+ messages posted in a month in wreckdot.  I wrote the article a year ago, when traffic was down to about 50 relevant messages per month.  Compare that to May of this year, when there was exactly one (!) windsurfing message posted in rec.windsurfing (congratulations Marc of the Baltimore Area Boardsailing Association).  Given the timing, I should have renamed the article "Rec.Windsurfing:  R.I.P."   Stick a fork in it.

Anyone who used to use rec.windsurfing knows what happened.   In the article I say that trolls, the rude, and those who never shut up drove users away from recdot.  Many former recdotters have found refuge in various manufacturers forums, iWindsurf and Windsurfing Magazine's forums etc where moderation helps keep things more civil, though in my opinion some of the old worst offenders in rec.windsurfing now lower the bar in iWindsurf's forum.   For my money the best online locations to discuss windsurfing these days are found at Boards Magazine and Seabreeze.

Fall Windsurfing Races On Long Island

Tentative dates for the second annual East Coast Fall Windsurfing Regatta have been announced.   Racemaster Tom Hering commented thusly in the Peconic Puffin:

We were thinking of holding it 1 day on Columbus Day weekend, 10/9 or 10/10, depending on the better wind day.  The event venue will also depend on the wind direction.
We'll do the announcements on the Puffin, the Yahoo Long Island group, and the regatta hot line.   So if someone has a compelling reason why that weekend does not work, shout it out now, otherwise PUT IT IN THE BOOK.

As Thom mentioned, this event holds off until Friday evening to announce the day (Saturday or Sunday) and location (selected to best take advantage of the wind direction) with the goal of racing in the best conditions. This worked brilliantly last year and we hope for the same in 2010.

Some things to think about twixt now and then:

1. Andy Brandt and ABK will be offering a special Racing Clinic during their visit to Napeague September 17-19 (the following week's clinic has a special Freestyle group FYI if you're thinking about taking on Mike Burns, Peconic Jeff, Deniz Kalaycioglu and their freestylin' kind at next year's East Coast Windsurfing Festival.)

2.  Last year's Fall Regatta winner Bill DeGeorge says he will return to defend his title.    Bill has been out with some shoulder issues (so he says...he could be dekeing) which is why we missed him at the ECWF, but he told the Peconic Puffin in an exclusive interview that he would be ready to tear it up again.  You know that George "the Point System Screwed Me Out Of First" Marr is looking forward to a rematch!

3.  Details on racing classes, courses, prizes, kisses at the podium, and finalization of dates will be announced in the coming weeks.

Loose Ends to the East Coast Windsurfing Festival

I would be remiss (as I so often am) if I did not get these last few bits and pieces out:

1.   Junior Division Results:  Total, complete, and utter domination by one Devon Roesch.   That would be Devon Son of Pete.   I once had "Must Defeat Pete" writ large on the deck of my Superlight before a competition in an attempt to inspire my own success (didn't work.)   Might I try "Confound Those Speedy Roeschs"?

2.  Relay Race Team Results:

The rosters for the teams are not available.  Suffice it to say that I sailed for a fifth place team.

3.  Spencer Buckets:

Jill Marr Superstar (coordinator of Neat Prizes and Trophies along with MC Thom) presented Spencer Buckets to top competitors.   This is as great and as useful a windsurfing prize as anyone could want (in my addled opinion)...if you've never used a Spencer Bucket, you don't know what you're missing.  Stand in it to change out of your wetsuit.   Use it as a catchall for wet messy things.  Rig your board's fins and footstraps on top of it.  Flip it and sit on it.  It has hundreds of uses! (well half a dozen).   I asked King of the East Mike Burns to put his through its paces and provide the Peconic Puffin feedback on how well it meets his pro freestyling needs.

4.  The Eternal Battle Between George and Pete:

George came in second and Pete in third in the races this year.   They came in fourth and fifth the year before.  The year before that Pete won the whole enchilada/spencer bucket/etc.   Anytime you get on the water with Pete and George it's like being a witness to battles from Greek mythology.  Kind of.   Also the odds are you'll end up behind them (I beat Pete once, but he was injured.)

5.  Unsung Heroes

A lot of people help make these events happen.  Besides MC Thom and King Mike and Jill Marr Superstar, there is Chrissy Burns keeping it real on the judging stand.  Bill Doutney capturing it all for posterity.   There are others whose names I don't know, but the safety boat and jet ski (and their operators) as well as the Parks department made it all possible as well.  Big thanks to them, and to those whose contributions I may be ignorant of, but am thankful for nevertheless.

6.  What's Next?

Me I'm hoping for a return of the Fall Regatta.   The Second Annual East Coast Fall Windsurfing Regatta has a nice ring to it!

Session with Seaplane, Southampton Style

It was so very Southampton:   A seaplane approached the beach at Towd Point Thursday morning as a red jeep drove down to the water to meet it.   I launched nearby on a 6.2 (lit) but jibed just a few hundred yards out to come back and watch the seaplane action…reach and jibe, reach and jibe and snoop, reach and jibe etc.    The pilot nudged the plane onto the beach, and then jumped out the side to open the door for his passengers.   They were a perfect Hamptons couple…him with the old comfortable shirt and shorts and sandals that are just the thing for a private door-to door plane ride, her the stunning tall Blonde (almost as stunning as my wife) with the 10,000 watt smile, and a very large stately dog.   Given the wind and chop the plane was bouncing quite a bit, and the pilot escorted the three of them to the beach.

I was still reaching and jibing and snooping (I adjusted my sailing track so I could snoop on both tacks) when the luggage procession began.  As the pilot and the driver led a parade of  colorful bags marching carefully down the pontoon, the Blonde waved at me.  So I of course A:  waved back, and B: focused on ripping dramatic jibes and jumps for my audience.    Then I thought “Doh!  What if they’re waving because they know me (not impossible, particularly if an old sailing buddy had recently acquired a huge dog) so I sailed in to the beach.   They were not who I thought they might be, but instead just some Beautiful People who waved at a windsurfer (and said some nice things to me on the beach, too.)   But enough people watching, it was time to play with that seaplane!

I quickly got back out into the bay, jibed on the outside, then jibed on the inside, hoping to drag race the plane when the pilot hit the throttle.    But after pulling away from the beach all he did was shlog, for a full minute.  Wasn’t this guy gonna take off?    Then it occurred to me that he thought I was nuts, and might get in his way doing something like drag racing him, and somehow screw up his take off.   So I shot way upwind and behind him, and waved.    He immediately hit the throttle.   I immediately jibed, but never had a shot at a match race as he was up in the air toot sweet.

(That was the original post.   I sailed until 1PM in building winds and water…sailing a 77 liter board and overpowered on a 5.3 before I left.   30 minutes later a seaplane stuck a pontoon and crashed during takeoff just two miles east of where I’d been windsurfing, just off of Bayview Oaks in the Little Peconic. Nobody was injured.  My guess is it was a different plane (because I watched "mine" fly away) but I don't know for sure.  What I do know is there were steep three-foot ramps out there, and it's not hard to imagine a plane's pontoon pearling in one of them.  In any event I'm glad nobody was hurt.  Local boaters went out and brought the crew and passengers back to shore, according to reports.)

Boneheaded Moves and Good Times at Heckscher

I can screw up anything.  Yet I somehow managed to have a good time at the windsurfing festival last weekend, despite the following:

-blanking out on the port/starboard rule 45 seconds after MC Thom reminded everyone about it, and ramming Peconic Jeff, who looked at me incredulously as I turned into him (maybe that’s what motivated him to trounce me in the freestyle competition.)

-forgetting just about everything during my second freestyle heat (“Dude, remember to breathe,” King of the East Mike Burns said to me.  You’d think I could remember that…)

-forgetting my BOARD Saturday night at the end of the first day’s festivities (thank you Joe Natalie for rescuing it and packing it as carefully as if it was his.)

-forgetting to post the Junior Division results and relay race results afterwards.   Will get them up as soon as possible.   Pete Roesch already reminded me that his son Devon won the Junior class…I’ve spent my Long Island windsurfing race career trailing behind Pete, and now I can look forward to additional humiliation in the wake of his son.

One thing I did right was to skip the board toss (ANOTHER thing Peconic Jeff  won.   I don’t think I can be his friend anymore…dude let me win something!)  Last year I managed the shortest toss of the event (spiking the nose) so I wisely let this opportunity for failure pass me by.   And I had nothing to do with the hole that was punched in Kurt's beautiful new race board (not that it stopped him from winning.)  And I managed to meet Hudson River Windsurfing blogger Ian, and Dan Perelmen of NY Windsurfing MeetUp and Joanne who just bought her first windsurfing board and lots of other great people.   And I got to match race with Ted Bretter (who I only beat because one of us had a weed fin.)   Good times!

Now I look forward to the Fall Regatta.   Boy will I screw that up!

Return of the King and the Crowning of New Champs: The East Coast Windsurfing Festival

"You're going to have so much to write about" at least half a dozen people said to me.  And it's true, but between trying to catch my breath, getting my butt kicked, and the fantastic three ring circus that was the third annual ECWF, for now here's just the top line:

-Kurt Veith could not be stopped on the race course, even when competitors tried to sink his board.

-Deniz fended off challenges in both racing and freestyle to be the queen of the Ladies competition.

-Peconic Jeff save the best for last, and blew the doors off of some strong competitors (and me) to win the Men's Amateur Freestyle

-Mike Burns, the first King of the East, pulled out all the stops to regain the throne.  All Hail Mike!

Freestyle Windsurfing Video: Mike Burns

If you windsurf on Long Island, you already know Mike.  Or maybe you've seen him on the water in Hatteras.   If you haven't, and particularly if you haven't but are coming to this weekend's East Coast Windsurfing Festival to compete in freestyle, check out the once (and possibly future) King of the East sailing at Heckscher and in the OBX, in a video Mike produced.   The man does it all.

These be details for the East Coast Windsurfing Festival a-comin this Saturday.  Some nitty gritty that thee best be payin' attention to, lest yet be findin' yoursel' at the bottom of Davy Jones' locker (which at Heckscher is admittedly not that far down.  Still...)

1.  Be thee on time enough to number thy sails proper like!   The event starts at 9:30.  Get there before so you have time to affix thy assigned number to thy sails.  Don't be thinkin' you'll pick your number afore the fest and show up prenumbered.  No!   Master of Numbers MC Jill might let you pick your number when you register, but if thy be thinkin' about being #1, 11, 111, 1111, or 11111 they better get thy arse there at dawn.

2.  There will be duct tape available, but if thee'd bring thine own for sail numbering it will help speed things up.  'nuff said.

3.  Pack thee a lunch!  Twer no vendors at the ECWF in years past, and taint likely there be any there this year.   So pack thy vittles and pack thy drink.   There are bathrooms in the vicinity.

- The main event, with multiple races is scheduled for Saturday, and possible Sunday, depending on how the racers feel.  If conditions are not conducive to sailing on Sat, we may decide as a group to postpone events until Sunday, June 13.  

  There will be several Race Divisions (all starting together but scored separately), including:

  -  Open Division - no limits re board or sails.  This will include RSX and Formula, and any boards with a sail > 7.5.

  -  7.5 Division - limited only to sails that do not exceed 7.5, and no formula gear.  Intended for the casual racer, this will likely be the largest fleet and main event.

Depending on participation, we may also post scores for: 

-        Women’s Division
 - Juniors Div  - (17 & under)
 - Masters  (50 yrs and over)
 - Heavyweights - (Actual weight category TBD)

The overall Champion will be in the largest fleet, which is likely to be the 7.5 Div.

Race courses will vary, and may include:

    - Windward/Leewards

    - Triangles

    - Slalom

    - Relays 

 

Starts may include:

    - Timed countdown starts

-  LeMans beach starts

-  Rabbit Start

Other potential events at the Regatta:

Heats and format will be announced on days of events, which are expected to be Sat & Sunday, depending on wind.

The winner of the Freestyle Pro Division will be named the 2010 King of the East.
