Boy did we not get crazy winds. But I did break a board.
When a true gale or tropical storm or hurricane comes into the area, we always head for a spot on the inner bays to make sailing as manageable and safe as possible. When it's supposed to scream from the northeast that means East Landing, and there was quite a crowd there, including Bill, CD, Eric, Jake, Jeffs Schlecter and Schulz, Johns Ford and vanderWolf, Scott, Vulcan George Pav, a sailor who just moved to the area from Florida, and several others whose names I'm blanking on (if you're reading this, blanked ones...please comment!)
Usually for a big storm we're out on our three meter sails (Jon Ford and Bill on low 4's, perhaps) and tiniest boards. More than a few guys only brought their smallest stuff. But the sail call was 4.7-5.7 depending on your mass (me on a 5.3 and 93 liters, after earlier smashing off the nose protector of Calamity Too...a JP 109 Freestyle). 5.3 in pouring rain...heck, several of us had been on the same sized gear the day before at South Jamesport, in bright warm sun. What the heck?
It's sunny and blowing today, though, so it's back to the races.
Meanwhile: Earl Shmurl.
(Check out the iWindsurf readings for Hatteras...70 gusting to 83 is what I call a lot of wind. I wonder who sailed?)
Unfortunately when there is a big storm involved the wind usually isn't that nice - at least that's what it is like here.

Matt Ryan aka Deuce (as in pushing 2001b), or hurricane Matt(dubbed by Jon Ford) was also there.

The wind on Martha's Vineyard was epic Sat(4.0) Sun(5.0) and Tue(5.0). Monday was a good SUP day but Earl didn't bring the big surf everyone was talking up and the waves were anything but clean. Still the best windsurfing trip I have had in 3 years and all I had to do was visit my old home. Back to NYC to hit the grind stone, planning to make it to the outside of Long Island for the first time this season during the next weekend with breeze, will hopefully see some of you out there.
