Save The Waves

Save The Waves is an environmental protection org whose mission is "To protect and preserve the coastal environment with a focus on the surf zone."   They have a vision of a world where waves and coastlines are cherished and protected, and surfing provides a proactive vehicle for long-term coastal conservation.

Sounds pretty important to us water folk, doesn't it?

As part of their latest fundraising efforts they're sharing a new film, directed by Puffin and Wind Chimp Christian Charles.  Check it out, then think about donating.  Here it is:

Danny MacAskill Strikes Big Time (video)

Danny MacAskill is the only non-watersport athlete that's ever been featured in The Peconic Puffin. His freestyle bike riding is so transcendentally mind-blowing that fans of any sport with freestyle can revel in its magnificence. He recently teamed up with GoPro to create this beauty. Enjoy, and make sure you watch until the very end!

Jibe By Dasher. Gratitude.

A couple months ago my jibe guru Dasher came through town, accompanied by his lovely girlfriend Maggie.   I got to spend some time with them, but unfortunately wind and waves did not present an opportunity to windsurf or SUPsurf (I would LOVE to get SUP coaching tips from Dasher).   To this day any time I hit a good jibe I experience a quick moment of gratitude, having once been The Worst Jiber In The World.   I still muck them up on occasion, but those are on me.  The good ones are credited to the reindeer.*

Jeff and Bruce Are Showing Their Stuff

There are a number of visual artists within the Puffin/Wind Chimp collective.   Right now at the Alex Ferrone Photography Gallery in Cutchogue Peconic Jeff Schultz and Bruce Milne (that's Bruce of Jan & Bruce) are showing some non-watersport art as part of the gallery's "Small Works" exhibit.   These are days of gift buying, my friends, and one might consider the work of these two guys!

iRoad Delivers Waves

(sorry about the long break...the editorial staff has been otherwise engaged.)

I am apparently the last person in Puffindom, Chimpdom, Chimply Puffindom, Puffinly Chimpdom etc to learn about I Road.  Between Ponquogue and The Bowl (park on the bay side, shlep over the wooden walkway, turn right to find a nice little break).   Having been overly dry this fall I decided to let Christian talk me into making the drive, even though the wave forecast was "Flat" and "ankle to calf high" depending on who you looked at.  No wind to speak of...SUPsurfing on a Sunday morning.

Nice spot!   Flat turned out to be knee to thigh high, with the occasional surprise (whatever the height of Christian's nipples are, that's the biggest wave I saw.)  Lefts and rights.  Christian, Jeff, and a few other people enjoyed the wave.   I will say the water is getting cold or I am getting wimply.  Gloves needed and being in the water was brisk, and hell we're not even out of the fall yet!  I must man up.  (Christian didn't even wear a hood.  "Like summer in England," he said.)

I look to return to  I Road.
